Volunteer Requirements at Loggerhead Marinelife Center:
Volunteers must be at least 16 years of age (18 for sea turtle rehab) and must work a minimum of 3.5 hours per week. There is a minimum six month commitment with exception to seasonal summer positions. No experience is necessary and training will be provided.
Current Volunteer Opportunites Include:
Sea Turtle Rehab – Are you interested in a hands-on experience working with an endangered species? This position requires extensive training, detailed reporting, and teamwork. Applicants must be 18 years of age or older, able to lift 50 pounds, tolerate frequent bending, and enjoy whatever the weather may bring. Volunteers will participate in cleaning tanks, food preparation, weighing and measuring the sea turtles. This is a highly coveted position and often times has a waiting list.
Counselor in Training (Seasonal Summer Position) – Are you good with kids and have free time in the summer? Being a CIT (counselor-in-training) is a great way to get service hours, prep for a real counselor position and just have fun! Junior Marine Biologist summer camp takes place June-August, in one week sessions. CIT positions are from 9-4pm M-F with at least a 3 week commitment. Spend your summer snorkeling, playing games, teaching kids and making friends. Outgoing personalities are a must!
Birthday Parties – Do you love teaching kids and have some time on Saturdays to volunteer? Birthday parties are a fun way to get service hours and spend time teaching children all about sea turtles. The center hosts two parties every Saturday at 11am and 2:30pm, lasting 2 hours each. Birthday party duties include taking the kids to the Turtle Yard, explaining our "biofacts", helping with an under the sea craft and telling stories. If you have a fun, enthusiastic personality, then birthday parties are for you!
Turtle Walks – One of our most prestigious roles is helping with our highly coveted Turtle Walks. Volunteers must be 18 or older and comfortable working at night. Turtle Walks take place from late May-July, 9-11:30pm. Several training sessions will be offered to get you acquainted with FWC guidelines as well as turtle identification and program parameters. Despite the late hour, volunteers who help with Turtle Walks leave with a sense of wonder and the satisfaction of teaching the public about one of Florida's most precious treasures.
Administrative – Would you enjoy supporting Loggerhead Marinelife Center from behind the scenes? We have administrative opportunities available in the marketing, development, and operations departments.
Aquarist – Do you have experience working with aquariums or an interest in learning? Help staff perform daily duties including food prep, feeding animals, monitoring food intake, water quality monitoring, cleaning tanks and exhibits, and monitoring the health of the animals.
